Northeast 5-mile run and 2-mile walk is this Sunday

The ninth annual Northeast Philly 5-Mile Run and 2-Mile Walk will take place this Sunday at Northeast Philadelphia Airport.

The event is organized by City Councilman Dennis O’Brien (R-at large).

Proceeds benefit the Northeast Philadelphia Youth Alliance, which O’Brien formed when he was a state representative.

The alliance consists of the following seven groups: the Academy Sabres Sports Association, Calvary Athletic Association, Liberty Bell Youth Organizations, Parkwood Youth Organization, Penn Academy Athletic Association, Philadelphia Soccer Club and Torresdale Boys Club.

Registration by Oct. 10 is $15, or $8 for 14-and-under. The fee after that deadline is $20, or $10 for 14-and-under.

Each participant will receive a T-shirt and a post-race breakfast. A disc jockey and the Penn Academy dancers will entertain the crowd, and there will be raffle drawings.

Visitors are asked to access the airport’s entrance at Grant Avenue and Ashton Road. There is plenty of free parking.

Registration begins at 7:15 a.m. The walk starts at 8:15, followed by the run at 9. An awards ceremony will take place at 10:30, with prizes to overall male and female winners and the top finishers in masters and age group categories.

The course is traffic-free and generally flat. The Torresdale Boys Club cheerleaders will encourage the runners and walkers along the way.
